Little towns with big sounds

Posted by on May 23, 2014

Music is such a part of the fabric of life in North Carolina. You don’t have to go far to find a place to stomp your feet and clap your hands. On this particular Thursday night, we headed just 45 minutes south of Asheville to the charming little town of Brevard, NC, Land of Waterfalls.

By design, each music venue we have visited has been entirely different in style. The impressive stately Silvermont Mansion built in 1917 was no exception. We could almost hear the glasses of mint juleps tinkling as we walked through the huge colonnaded front porch.

When we entered, the musicians were already underway, seated in a circle in the front parlor playing some lively bluegrass. We were directed to pull up a folding chair in the connecting dining room or out in the hallway. One by one, each musician took the microphone, choosing a song for the others to follow. See if you can notice how the player leading the group signals the end of the piece.

Before we left, Bob Hurring, the auto harp player, kindly invited Manny and I to join him the following night at the Lake Toxaway Community Center. There, a spirited old time country band entertains an audience of 100 or more enthusiastic neighbors every Friday night. The hall was filled with good old American merriment where you can enjoy a home cooked meal at 6:00, and then get ready hit the dance floor at 7:00!
