Some Things are Sacred

Posted by on September 30, 2012

We needed to resupply before heading back to the US, so we decided to stop at SuperStore, a top Toronto foodstore chain. Closed?? How can that be? It’s Monday. When we queried a local resident, she replied matter-of-factly, “It’s Labor Day.”

Well sure it’s Labor Day, but hey, I ask you, is it fair to close on the day before school starts? What if somebody needs extra pencils or a new lunch box or something else critical to a successful first day of school. Is it possible that Canadian business doesn’t care about its customers like its American counterpart does? We were astounded that in Toronto, the financial capital of Canada, EVERYTHING was closed on Labor Day.

Well, we say, “Good for them!”

According to Wikipedia, Labor Day is observed to celebrate the economic and social contributions of workers. What better way to honor employees than by giving them a day of rest!

And another heads-up for those of you who must call or text while driving: you’d better stay in the United States if you are behind the wheel and communication with someone via a handheld device becomes imperative.

In EVERY province in Canada, this dangerous practice is against the law and subject to substantial fines.

Watch out! This law may be coming soon to your neighborhood… we hope!
