Mile Marker 65

On the road of life, there are certain birthdays that are particularly symbolic. These are some of life’s special milestones:

  • At 7, your First Communion if you are Christian.
  • At 13, your Bar Mitzvah of Bat Mitzvah if you are Jewish
  • At 16, your mom or dad don’t have to chauffeur you around anymore
  • At 18, you get to serve your country and vote
  • At 21, now you can drink (legally)
  • At 30, you are presumably an adult
  • At 40, you either know where you’re going —or worry if you don’t
  • At 50, AARP membership mysteriously arrives at your mailbox
  • At 65, the government starts picking up your tab!

Mexico’s charm

In the past, when I told my friends we were going to Mexico for vacation, they would express excitement and make an envious comment. Today when I tell them we are going, the response is one of concern and everyone bids us a safe journey. It’s too bad. Although Mexico has its share of problems, it also has an allure that I’ve experienced in few other places. Read more »

New best friends

Henry & Janice Sattler

Henry & Janice Sattler

I’m the type of person who likes to get more than one thing done on an outing. For example, if I drive to the food store, I’ll stop at the post office and bakery on the way. So when we received our invitation to attend the 2011 Leisure Travel Van rally, it was the added excuse we needed to drive to Manitoba Canada to get some work done on Serena, our 24.5 ft. Serenity motorhome.

Serena's Solar Panels

Serena's Solar Panels

Being that Serena is just under a year old, we wanted to take the opportunity to correct a few minor problems while she is still under warranty. Plus, there were some additional items we wished to add —solar panels were big on Manny’s list— and thought it prudent to have all the work done by the people who built her and know her best. The Democracy Convention

Manny & Roz In Madison

Manny & Roz In Madison

A few weeks ago, we got an email from Michael Moore listing events happening around the country with the purpose of empowering people to take our country back. When we saw the announcement for the first Democracy Convention being held in Madison, WI, we knew we had to attend. Not only is Madison the home of Manny’s beloved alma mater, the University of Wisconsin, but the dates of the conference coincided with his 64th birthday. If you believe in signs, this was one in flashing neon.

We weren’t content to simply attend. With the political and economic quagmire our country is in, and no indication of extricating ourselves any time soon, Manny and I had been feeling frustrated and powerless. Many of our friends felt the same. We decided to initiate a group of like minded people of our generation, to take back control of our lives and of our government. And so, Boomers For Democracy was born. Read more »

Back in Madison – for a different reason

Manny & Roz In Madison

Manny & Roz In Madison

We’ve arrived in Madison once again, this time to participate in a thrilling event: the first national Democracy Convention.

We will be blogging about our experiences in the city where I spent two exhilarating years, my junior and senior years in college, back in the heady days of 1969-1971.

As luck would have it, on August 25th I will be celebrating my 64th birthday in this happening city. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to spend my birthday with my partner in life!

Dear Roz, will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I’m sixty-four?

I have developed a sister website, www.boomersfordemocracy.org, where we will be blogging about our participation in this stimulating convention.

Thank you, Mary Jo

We decided that this trip would be good practice for when we begin our full-time RV lifestyle. We’re discovering that one of the trickiest things to accomplish is keeping to a budget. It’s difficult to travel like you are on vacation, but to spend money like you are at home. Every discretionary expense has to be considered carefully. Consequently, a bad meal out is a bigger bummer than it would normally be.

Finding a good restaurant is always a challenge, particularly in an age when quantity, not quality, is the magnet that attracts many diners. Factor in being in a strange place and you’re lucky if you can find a 7 or an 8 on the scale of 10. But when the chief of police of Warren, Pennsylvania, suggested the Docksiders Cafe, we thought we had an inside track. Much to our dismay, however, the only thing we liked was the restaurant’s location, overlooking the Kinzua Dam Marina. Read more »

Ohio’s small gestures

Still savoring the flavor of scenic Route 6, which had taken us deep into the lush verdant Allegheny mountains through small towns like Wellsboro and Warren that recalled Main Street America of the 1800’s, we weren’t quite ready for the contemporary rudeness we experienced the moment we crossed into Ohio, our seemingly surly neighbor.

The normal driving etiquette when encountering a vehicle with out of state license plates going slowly, obviously lost, should be to either offer assistance or to pass cautiously.  In Ohio, however, it seemed that the procedure is to lay on the horn and pull around angrily, waving indecipherable hand gestures out the window. 3 and 1/2 hours & 40 years from home

Three and a half hours and forty years from home, that’s what Honesdale PA will always be for me.

Even though we spent the night only an hour away and the Roots and Rhythm Concert didn’t start till 1:45, we still arrived late. But as events unfolded, we were right on time. Read more »

Tapas Night, with recipes!

I know we’ve been promising recipes, so hang on to your berets… this is the blog you’ve been waiting for.

We decided to stay on just one more day visiting the Millers. Their home is so comfortable —yes, we are cheating on Serena and staying in a stationary house— and their hospitality so generous, it is hard to leave. Read more »
